Youth Radio Receives Second Edward R. Murrow Award for Reflections on Return from War: Youth Voices

BERKELEY, CA — Youth Radio wins the Edward R. Murrow award of the Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA). Youth Radio reporters and producers will receive the award on Monday, October 17, 2005 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City and have been selected as one of the few recipients to speak before an audience that will include David Strathairn, the actor who plays Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney’s new film, Good Night, and Good Luck.

The winning series, “Reflections on Return,” highlights the voices of U.S. soldiers who are the youngest veterans of the continuing war in Iraq. It is fitting that Youth Radio won this award working in the tradition of Edward R. Murrow – reporting the reality of war straight from the communities affected. At a time when journalism appears to be in a crisis of confidence and courage, our young producers have shown both. Youth Radio gives voice to the men and women in their teens and early twenties who were sent to war, and then brought home, often unprepared to re-enter civilian life as young adults.

Reflections on Return highlights young soldiers’ first person narratives of injury and homecoming, their responses to the prison abuse scandal at Abu Ghraib, and their reflections on the ongoing conflict on the ground in Iraq. These stories are, of course, widely covered in the global media, and the major players in almost all of them are young. What is unique about Youth Radio’s series is that the reporting is done not by embedded journalists, but by the young soldiers themselves. The series presents a tremendous range of perspectives, from soldiers refusing to serve, to those opposing the war upon their return, to still others eager to go back to Iraq for multiple deployments.

The process of reporting these stories has been challenging emotionally, politically, and editorially for these young soldiers. But, thanks to the high quality of the reporting and Youth Radio’s success disseminating their stories, the struggle has paid off.

For more information about this honor for Youth Radio please contact Lissa Soep (Senior Producer and Education Director), Ellin O’Leary (Founder and Executive Producer), or Nishat Kurwa (News Director).
