Youth Radio Voted Best of The East Bay, 2005
BERKELEY- Youth Radio has been honored by "East Bay Express" in its latest edition of The 2005 Best of the East Bay: Going 2 Extremes. Choosen as an Editor's Choice Award, Youth Radio holds the honor of "Muck-Rakingest Youth Radio Show: Youth Radio on KPFA 94.1 FM."
Youth Radio's KPFA Morning Show can be heard every Saturday morning, from 10 to 11 a.m on KPFA 94.1 FM in Berkeley and KFCF 81.1 FM in Fresno. The morning show is our weekly public affairs magazine, highlighting the latest in youth music, news, and culture, and Youth Radio interviews, commentaries, and features. Stories and play lists for the program are contributed by Youth Radio students and graduates. Our 2004/2005 production lineup includes: Youth Hosts Mike McKenna, Dennis Penate, Jacqueline Sexton, and Isabelle London; Producers Nishat Kurwa, Raquel Maria Dillon, and Rebecca Martin; and Music Director Gerald "Whiz" Ward.
"East Bay Express" is a free weekly circulation. The Express has been serving the East Bay community since 1978, providing authoritative cover stories; in-depth local reporting, arts and dining coverage; and a comprehensive weekly calendar. Every year, the paper announces its Best of the East Bay, broken into two different types of awards, Editor's Choice and Reader's Choice. Editor's Choice is decided upon by local writers and editors around the Bay, and Reader's Choice is balloted and voted on by the readers.
This year, The 2005 Best Of the East Bay celebrates the extremes of East Bay life- from the healthiest menu to the greasiest spoon, and the most heroic person to the most thought-provokingest professor. The Express will honor winners of Best of the East Bay at the Best of the East Bay: Going 2 Extremes Wrap Party. Featuring the Bay Area's top local talent Crown City Rockers, Baby Jaymes, and DJ J-Boogie, the event will be hosted at @ Seventeenth in downtown Oakland on April 7th, 2005.

Heard Saturdays at 10 a.m., the hour-long Youth Radio show broadcasts the results of a hands-on training program for budding journalists. Founded by Ellin O'Leary, the program has already turned out the next generation of radio talent now working at public and commercial radio stations. The idea is to empower teens by giving them skills to express their opinions via produced stories and commentaries, in which they take on parents, dating, health, politics, the sag, and other topics, with a seldom-heard viewpoint. Since 1992, Youth Radio has bagged many prestigious journalism awards, and its features and programs are aired on commercial and noncommercial stations across the country. But perhaps what gives Youth Radio its East Bay stamp and deeper meaning is the unity it creates amongst communities here by using a diverse cast of male and female voices to help break down division and misunderstanding.
