Mission Girls: A Project of Girls Sound-Off
Girls Sound Off is a creative radio, video and writing training program that provides a much needed opportunity for girls and young women to explore how media affects their ideas on issues like sexuality, race and identity. The eight week sessions take place at foster care facilities, group homes and community programs that exclusively focus on the healthy development of girls and young women.
The summer 2006 site took place at Mission Girls, a non-profit organization serving young women in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. At the end of the program, the girls produced a video called "A Letter to the Mayor," which discussed how they would like to change the Mission. Youth Radio Peer Educator and Producer Denise Tejada won the Mission Cultural Center Film Fest Youth Producer award for her work on the video.

On Wednesday, August 9, Mission Girls and Youth Radio presented the video to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Check out a slideshow of their visit to the Mayor's office!
Commentaries from Mission Girls:
Music Important to Me
Banda is important because my cousin just came from Mexico and still wants to be close to it, so she listens to that music; salsa because it has a beat that my mom likes and think it's important; reggaeton because it's popular; and disco because my stepdad still like to listen to the music they played in his days. The music that I think reflects my identity as a Latina and richness and culture can be banda, because it usually reminds me of who I am and where my family is from. The music I see on TV and hear on the radio teaches me a lot of things, sometime good, sometimes bad. I think the information and messages it teaches me are both helpful and harmful because they can talk about things that can hurt the environment. They also talk about how you can help somebody.

Music In My House
Music inside my household is old school, like Prince, New Kids on the Block, and sometimes, the Temptations or Stevie Wonder. We listen to hip-hop, R&B, and in my community some people listen to Latin music. My friend Diane is Portuguese, and she listens to Portuguese music. I kinda' like that music, but sometimes I don't want to listen to it. I want to play my guitar and make-up music or just put on my ipod or the radio or a CD. The music my family listens to on the radio is 106 KMEL, 103, or 102.1. When my mom Anna hears a song from when she was younger she turns the music up really loud and starts to sing, it makes me laugh. My mom is really the one that got me into music because if she didn't let me listen to it, then I wouldn't know about it. And that's why I like to listen to music.

Soccer
Soccer is a good sport. It started in Mexico. How I started to play soccer was because my dad, he played when he was a little kid. I saw him play, then I started to play a lot of soccer. Now I'm on a soccer team. We win lots of times, we learn how to win...but especially how to lose. I think soccer is interesting because there's different teams and they are all from different parts of the world: My favorite soccer teams are Mexico and Brazil. I have fun watching soccer games because I like that I learn how to be a good soccer player.
