National Association of Black Journalists Honor Youth Radio
Youth Radio has been announced as a First Place Winner in the 2003 National
Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Awards for "Welcome
to My World." The entry included a special feature produced in 2002, "Oakland
Scenes: Snapshots of a Community," and the KQED-FM program "Oakland
Violence."
Both the feature and the show were produced by teens and young adults. "Oakland
Scenes" began as a roundtable discussion with Youth Radio's core training
class (14-17), some of whom had witnessed gun violence and its aftermath, and
some of whom lost friends to gun violence.
Our broadcast training director, Gerald Ward, II, himself a native of East Oakland
and a Youth Radio graduate, will travel to Dallas to accept the award on behalf
of the young people at Youth Radio
Based in Berkeley, California, with bureaus in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C.,
and Atlanta, Youth Radio promotes the intellectual, creative and professional
growth of youth ages 11-24 through training and access to media.
