Native Public Media: Youth Radio - Frequency of the future
Native Public Media staff met on January 26 and 27 in Oakland, CA at Youth Radio --- nationally and internationally known as a cutting edge youth development and media organization that weaves the fast end of the “digital curve” with best practices and innovation in community based education.
WIRETAP: "Radio Free Youth"
The precursor for young people's new media may be found in three decades of community radio. Twice a week, Dolna Smithback makes her way to the offices of KSFR, Santa Fe Public Radio, on the city's community college campus. Soon to graduate high school and head for college, Smithback has spent nearly two years at KSFR's Youth Media Project.

Northern California Grantmakers recognized Resuleo's good work at Youth Radio and honored him Thursday with the 2008 "The Kid Who Cares" award, which goes to youth who fit the bill for being "unselfish, curious, and compassionate, a community builder who gives something back and shows special concern for peers, family, neighborhood or school." Northern California Grantmakers is an association of foundations that promotes "the well-being of people and their communities."
RW ONLINE RADIO WORLD NEWSPAPER: "A Chance to Find Yourself in Media"
In 1991, Youth Radio was launched in Berkeley, Calif. Its goal was to give economically disadvantaged kids the chance to find a future in radio by giving them a free after-school education in broadcasting.
MIX: "The Bay Area's Broadcasters of Tomorrow Learn the Ropes Through Cutting-Edge After-School Media Education"
Youth Radio is spinning off a production company called Youth Media International (YMI), which will include Web production sponsored by ZeroDivide, a technology foundation that invests in non-profit organizations helping low-income and underserved communities, and more. Youth Media International's first pilot concept series is titled What's the New What.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
Yvonne b. Burke Courage Award – The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations honored Youth Radio Los Angeles with the Yvonne B. Burke Courage Award at a luncheon on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Luminarias in Monterey Park, California. For the past 36 years, the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations and County Board of Supervisors has honored outstanding individuals and companies that have demonstrated leadership in making the county a better and more harmonious place for all to live and work.
