Getting Behind the Wheel

"There are only 102 days, 9 hours, 27 minutes and...18 seconds until I can drive."

By Nico Savidge

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Nico Savidge just wants to drive, and eagerly awaits the day when he can legally sit behind the wheel of a car. Even though he's months away from getting his liscense, he still hasn't given up on the countdown and keeps dreaming big. Driver's license? Please... Nico's waiting for that, plus a Ferrari and what he calls "the perfect stretch of open mountain road" to drive on.

There are only 102 days, 9 hours, 27 minutes and… 18 seconds until I can drive.

I am obsessed with cars. I usually read about 5 car magazines a month. I have an intense need to drive because I skipped a grade, I’m a year younger than just about all my classmates.

So, while I gawk at the historic marques of Ferrari, Maserati and the like, dreaming of the day when I can drive anything with four wheels and an engine – my peers can just waltz on down to the Department of Motor Vehicles any time they want and get a permit.

Sure, I might have come to grips with some hard realizations – I’ll probably never have, drive or even sit in a Ferrari F430, my dream car but still, just for that opportunity to drive – for the perfect stretch of open mountain road all car nuts dream about – I’ll keep my countdown going.
