You may think that garage band music died out with grunge in the late nineties, but think again, because the flannel-shirt-wearing, backhouse-playing groups like Weezer and Green Day are back with a vengence in some communities. Youth Radio's Joe Oliver has been so inspired by these groups that he started his own garage music band with his friends, and plays music that reflects his everyday life as an Atlanta high school student.
I’m the leader and lead singer guitarist of a garage band called Adamantium.
Our sound can be described by my three biggest rock alternative music influences – Weezer, Green Day, and Ben Folds Five. Most of the songs have a lyrical sincerity and confessional style. I write the lyrics, the guitarist, Jack, creates a trademark, and drummer Cameron provides spastically varied, but neatly measured rhythm.
One of our hits is “This Party Sucks,” a stressed out rocker with frustrations about lame parties, warm cola and the staggering number of white people at my old school who wanted to be black. One of our oldest songs is a love anthem called “Catherine,” about a girl I liked on the debate squad.
We have periods of inactivity, especially since Cameron’s mother frequently cancels practices at the last minute. Cameron is really lazy, and Chandler and I have song writing disputes. But up on stage, it’s all worth it.
Who knows, the next time you hear my voice, it could be on an FM rock station.
