"...If I see my parents checking out the new, multi-functional iPhone, I’ll give them one stern warning: 'Step away from the gizmo.'"

By Nico Savidge

Listen to this Commentary!

Everyone who owns an iPod knows operating it is pretty easy, right? Well, Youth Radio's Nico Savidge has to walk his mom through the whole ipod experience, because she always needs help using it. After getting an ipod for Christmas, Nico's mom realized keeping up with generation Y was harder than she thought. Nico says, "I have been subjected to a barrage of questions like, 'How do I make it play?' My annoyed response is - 'Press play.'" (February 4 on KCBS)

My parents look at the computer the way my cat looks at a mirror. Complete bewilderment.

Last November, my mom dropped numerous not-so-subtle hints that she wanted an iPod for Christmas. You know, stuff like “I have to take so many CD’s with me when I travel, it sure would be nice if I could have a smaller way to carry them.” But since she’s gotten the iPod, there’s been a never-ending stream of questions about how to work it.

The iPod has a pretty simple layout: five buttons on a wheel that’s used to scroll through your music. However, this layout has proven much too complicated for my mom. I have been subjected to a barrage of questions like, “How do I make it play?” My annoyed response is - “press play.”

So if I see my parents checking out the new, multi-functional iPhone, I’ll give them one stern warning: “Step away from the gizmo.”
