Anna Nicole Overload

"It's infuriating how major world events seem less important than Anna Nicole Smith's death."

By Ankitha Bharadwaj

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Ankitha Bharadwaj discusses all the media hype over Anna Nicole's recent death - and says she's sick of hearing about it! Ankitha wonders why the news chooses to cover celebrity death over world crisis. (February 25 on KCBS)

For the past week I’ve been beaten over the head with the intense media coverage of Anna Nicole Smith’s death, and I’m sick of it!!

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a horrible tragedy that she died, but enough is enough. Anna Nicole Smith wasn't the first celebrity to die. And, not to be rude or anything, but she wasn't exactly Ghandi. So why are people spending days and days obsessing over her personal life?

It's infuriating how major world events seem less important than Anna Nicole Smith's death. For example, all the devastation in Darfur and the violent eruptions in Ethiopia and Somalia became mere afterthoughts to headlines like, "Smith's body 'belongs to me,' Florida judge says." It just goes to show how entertainment nowadays passes for hardcore journalism.

And now with all the inheritance battles and "who's the daddy" drama, I wonder how much longer the media will care about her death. Probably only until the next celeb bites the dust, and of course, the pseudo journalists will be all over it.
