Muggle Struggle

"People with blond hair and blue eyes seemed as exotic to me as the fire-breathing dragons in Harry’s world. "

By Ankitha Bharadwaj

Listen to this Commentary!

As the voyage of Harry Potter ends, Youth Radio’s Ankitha Bharadwaj reflects on the very broad happenings of his story and hers. She notices a parallel with herself and Mr. Potter. She say’s, "like him, when I arrived in this new place, I was awestruck by everything around me."

When I moved from India to America at nine years old, I felt a lot like Harry Potter entering Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Ten years ago Harry Potter embarked on a journey to a new world filled with wizards, goblins, and above all, magic. Like him, when I arrived in this new place, I was awestruck by everything around me. People with blond hair and blue eyes seemed as exotic to me as the fire-breathing dragons in Harry’s world. With everything around me changing, I found comfort in Harry’s story, and identified with his fears and frustrations.

Now, the Potter saga is coming to a close. It’s time for Harry and my generation of Potter fans to deal with the final chapters of our adolescence. While our hero’s story culminates in a face-off with Voldemort, I’ll be tackling a different sort of demon– college applications. And as Harry’s journey ends, I’ll take comfort in the fact that mine is just beginning.
