Her Majesty
"The Queen eventually announces that she will be coming to Elizabeth’s town, and everybody, including Elizabeth, prepare busily for the Queen’s arrival."
By Ashley Jones
Her Majesty is the surprisingly charming story of a young New Zealand
Girl, Elizabeth Wakefield, who is on the verge of teenage life. All of Elizabeth’s friends are starting to go on their first dates. But Elizabeth is the odd one out, always stirring up mischief and setting herself further and further apart from the crowd.
Although she is lacking in the social graces department, Elizabeth is about to experience her proudest moment. Elizabeth is in awe of the Queen of England. She writes letter after letter to her role model, asking if the Queen could one day visit her town in rural New Zealand. The Queen eventually announces that she will be coming to Elizabeth’s town, and everybody, including Elizabeth, prepare busily for the Queen’s arrival.
While preparing for the historical visit, Elizabeth finds herself getting attached to an old woman, who all the townspeople believe to be a witch. However, while her relationship with the “witch”, who is actually an indigenous New Zealand tribe member, grows stronger, Elizabeth uncovers the startling truth about her “oh-so-perfect” town’s residents. Elizabeth is then put in the uncomfortable
situation of choosing sides. She’s caught between her family, who wants Elizabeth to have nothing to do with the “witch”, and the “witch”, who holds the truth about the town.
The film is based on historical events. After watching, you will feel as if you learned something and have been entertained. Elizabeth Wakefield is a sweet, courageous and a wonderful example of a teenaged girl. You’ll find yourself pulled into the story because you can put yourself in her shoes.
