School and War

The government has screwed over the children of America with this stupid war.

Listen to this Commentary!

By Simon Hadley

If President Bush is out there reading this, here is some advice. This evil sadistic act that you are pulling is not cute and it’s the dumbest thing you will ever do. Bush, I really believe that you are a hypocrite. You have the audacity to tell everybody that you care about the children and their education. But it’s so amazing — the war is taking money from schools all over the nation, and your no-good, evil-doing behind can’t say why you have to take people’s hard earned tax dollars for this war.

News stations like Channel Two, which claims to have won awards for best news coverage in the Bay Area, have not been covering the budget cuts at my high school. There haven’t been stories on how parents feel about this horrible situation, and if you guys are out there, you apparently didn’t deserve that darn award, and I will be talking to your bosses about this. Teachers are likely to get fired, and the underclassmen probably won’t have any electives next year — or in years to come. That makes it hard for those students to get into universities. And don’t think it stops there; the colleges are cutting back too.

A friend of mine went to one of the school board meetings and she asked, “What happens when I want to go to a university, since you guys are cutting art, music, home ec? If someone’s trying to major in these things, there won’t be any elective prep for people who want to go on and study those fields.”

The board members said they are trying to negotiate with the universities to lower their standards. I would have told him, “Now what university that you know will lower their standards just because electives are getting cut in high schools?” If you know one, please let me know.

And back to Bush. If you’re out there, please answer this question. What about kids who have learning disabilities? Those kids can’t learn as well as other kids. I had been in special ed for many years. Not to say that I am dumb or anything like that. If you went to my school and saw those kids you would understand that it’s a class where you get help in the areas you aren’t good in, like math or english. Not everyone learns at the same pace. These ridiculous budget cuts are firing the teachers who can give these children the special attention they need. So we might not be able to go out in the real world with a very high educational status. That means our chances of surviving in the real world are very low. What is Bush going to do then?

But that’s the problem: no one really wants to talk about it. So Bush, stop worrying about starting fights with other countries. You need to worry about your own country and the destruction of the children here.
