Mandatory Voluteering

"I do not think that young people should be forced to give back to the community, especially when people make a mockery of it."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Holly Malaika Kamau

I have a required 75 hours of volunteering and community service to graduate from high school, almost 99% of which I haven't even started. So how the heck am I supposed to get into college or get my dream job? Come on people. Mandatory volunteer work? That's like saying jumbo shrimp. Don't get me wrong, volunteering is great. It gives you a wonderful "I've helped someone" feeling. I enjoyed every second of the quick minute of volunteering that I did do and would love to do more.

I know our society benefits when we help each other. However I do not think that young people should be forced to give back to the community, especially when people make a mockery of it. Teachers have just said, "wash this chalkboard and I will give you 3 hours of community service." So are these people forcing us to wash that dirty nasty board they have in their classrooms or encouraging young people to volunteer? If you're not going to take this rule seriously, why try to enforce it? Let's not corrupt the minds of our future generations with a pointless oxymoron like mandatory volunteering.
