School Security
"I wish more schools had more frequent metal detector searches."
By Mark Brown
I don’t know if it’s me, but every school I’ve been to lacks a good security. But what is good security? I just moved out here to California not too long ago, so I don’t really have much to say about school security out here. Back in my hometown of Miami, security guards don’t even exist. We basically had the city police at school. They were under different names: Miami-Dade County School Police. They had canines, pepper bombs, and carried the same equipment city police touted.
From experience, the guards needed to use those procedures. I remember back in Miami a teacher at my old middle school was assaulted. I wish more schools had more frequent metal detector searches. The last school I attended had these security measures and it prevented a lot of weapons from being brought to school.
Now, the experiences I’ve had since being in California have been better. I haven’t been to any inner city schools out here so I don’t really know what security is like those schools. I used to go to an inner city school and it was the worst school you could attend in Miami. Right now, I go to a school some would say is out in the boondocks. Security is different here.
The security guards remind me of the guards at the elementary school I went to; walking around with walkie-talkies, whistles, telling students to go to class and snitching on them. I guess it’s better than nothing; it gets the job done. Although the security guards have respect from the students, they’re not really on top of their jobs.
To students, that’s a good thing because you can get away with a lot of things. However, to concerned parents it’s an issue that needs to be addressed. Maybe it’s better to keep security simple, instead of taking the extra measure like back in my hometown.
Now, I’m not trying to make security look bad in Miami, or any other school security jobs anywhere in the country. I do respect the security guards out here, but I just think they should do their job better to prevent any more school violence.
