School Violence

"School violence is a major problem around the United States, but do we really know the reason why teenage students can only take out their aggression...by resorting to violence?"

By Starr Stansberry

In high school, people come from all over the district to be educated; some even come from other cities. When people gather together at these schools, most become friends with each other or just slightly acquainted. However, there are some people that just cannot get along, whether it be with another student or the faculty.

School violence is a major problem around the United States, but do we really know the reason why teenage students can only take out their aggression or solve a problem with someone else by resorting to violence? Well, if we had an answer there would probably be a solution available to this problem. Why does school violence occur so often? Why must there be metal detectors in the entrance of schools and why are teachers quitting their jobs due to unruly students?

Perhaps it’s because of how the students were raised? Possibly, some kids are raised to be racist and if someone makes a rude comment to someone about their race, of course that person will be mad! Who wouldn’t? But is it right to hurt this person because they made that statement? Maybe it’s all they know and it’s not their fault, but then again there comes a point in everyone’s life when we know what’s right and what is wrong. Some students fight over someone’s sexual preference, which to me is completely understandable because if someone of the same sex comes on to a person who is not of that sexuality, I would take this as an invasion of personal space.

Another reason why there is school violence is because of the turf mentality. Everyone is claiming different areas and saying whose is better, of course this is going to light a fuse. It is a matter f pride. It has been going on from the Egyptians to the Romans, claiming their own and attacking others because they feel they should rule the world.

Then there are the riots that occasionally happen. Students feel that they are being wronged or disrespected, so they speak up about it. Sadly, their voices aren’t even heard. How else are they supposed to get the attention of their superiors if all they do is ignore students when they come correct?

But these are not the real reasons why there is school violence; it is how we take care of the situations that befall us. What is the solution? There isn’t one, but I’m sure that if we all do what’s right, no one will have to create a solution, because it will already be taken care of.
