Backpack Trends

"Five years ago, students with backpacks were often considered nerdy. Now, many students wear them because they are considered ‘cool’."

By Sam Ross

Most students wear them everyday; some for convenience, others for fashion. They’re fairly simple, yet there is a large variety. What is it that I’m talking about? Backpacks.

Backpacks became popular about forty years ago to help students lug around their books and papers, but they have become more popular in recent years. Five years ago, students with backpacks were often considered nerdy. Now, many students wear them, because they are considered ‘cool’.

A new trend in backpacks is the kiddy plastic backpacks. The other day, I saw some guys strolling down the street, who thought they were hot stuff – sagging their pants and trying to act ‘thuggish’. They had small plastic Sponge Bob backpacks on. Very intimidating.

Some styles I will never get. My best guess of where the bizarre style came from is that people started wearing them as a joke, but so many people started wearing them, they eventually became cool. Another style I don’t quite get is to wear small, thin, simple backpacks. It’s nicer than wearing a Sponge Bob backpack, but the style also includes wearing the backpack like clothing.

Not only is it uncomfortable to have your backpack on all day, especially while seated, but I don’t even find backpacks very nice from a fashion point of view. In addition, it’s difficult to fit much school supplies in them. So what I want to know is where this style came from and why do people follow it.

The standard, most common backpacks now have all sorts of features built in – some convenient, others pointless. Some have sport mesh water bottle holders, or built-in walkman pouches with headphones coming out the strap. A lot of these features can be nice, but they do come with some downsides.

Often, these fancy backpacks are downright ugly and, not only are you paying for an ugly backpack, but the bags are also expensive and can cost as much as $80. That’s way too much, when you can find a backpack for $5 at Walgreens.
