"My parents keep me home on school nights so I'll do my homework, even if my friends are going out for pizza."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Alex Espinoza

I remember when I was in middle school, I never got anything but A's and the occasional B.

I would rip open that report card right there in the quad at school, knowing I'd see a high 3-point-something or even a 4.0. "Jesus Christ," my friends would say, "You're a genius." Now, they say, "Well, I thought you were a genius!" I can't exactly pinpoint when it happened, but once I got into High School, I stopped caring about academics.

My parents keep me home on school nights so I'll do my homework, even if my friends are going out for pizza. But I don't do my homework, which totally defeats the purpose of my school night imprisonment. Now, my report card is mailed home. I show it to my parents right away.

There's no point in hiding it. It's almost like they expect to be disappointed. "We know you're very smart. You just have to apply yourself." I've heard that so many times. I know what they'll say before they open their mouths.
