The Riley Reputation

"They also never turned in work and fought almost everyday they were at school."

Listen to this Commentary!

By De’Shawnna Riley

As soon as teachers hear my last name, they say, “Here comes trouble!”

My family has a reputation. My dad and his sisters were uncontrollable when they were at school. They also never turned in work and fought almost everyday.

I get As and Bs and I listen in class. But teachers make assumptions anyway. I started to think, “What am I doing wrong?” My mom had to go to the Fall Open House and tell off my teachers. She said, “Just because DeShawnna’s a Riley doesn’t mean she is a troublemaker. I raised her better than that. She’s capable of really good work.” Her fifteen minute lecture made a big impression on me. It also made me realize I have to be on my best behavior, because I have goals in life, and people might not always want me to succeed.

They say, reputations can make or break you! But I’m smart enough to make my own good reputation.
