We've all been guilty of it at some point in our lives. Either quickly glancing at a neighbor's paper because we're curious to see whether our answers match or bringing along cheat sheets in our pockets, because we procrastinated and didn't study hard enough-- we've succumbed to the temptation for one reason or another. For Youth Radio's Karime Blanco, feeling overwhelmed about the exam drove her cheat. "I think that as long as I know that I’m learning- it’s not so bad to bend the rules with a few epidermal footnotes." (September 18 on KCBS)
I reached over my teacher’s desk with my right hand and checked her face to see if she had a hint of suspicion. I knew it wasn’t too hard to see the scribbles on the edge of my palm.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t just completely blow off studying and depend on my arm for informational support. I studied long and hard, and no, I didn’t procrastinate. The test wasn’t that hard, but I was overwhelmed by having to memorize the six steps of accounting, along with the four types of products, the five types of costumer satisfaction and all the while worrying about what I would wear the next day.
I know it sounds like I’m just trying to excuse the fact that I cheated, but at least I didn’t write complete answers on my arm- just a few acronyms to remind me of what I studied. It’s not like I stole a copy of the answers or looked at someone else’s paper.
I think that as long as I know that I’m learning- it’s not so bad to bend the rules with a few epidermal footnotes.
