iPod Mania Disrupting Classrooms

"While I’m trying to pay attention to my teacher, a girl who sits across from me constantly plays with her toy while text messaging her friends."

By Ankitha Bharadwaj

Youth Radio’s Ankitha Bharadwaj voices her opinion on iPods becoming a distraction in the classroom. “It’s fine if people want to listen to their iPods in class, as long as it doesn’t disrupt those who are trying to learn.”

I have a hellish filled eighty-four minutes in my Advance Algebra II class. While I’m trying to pay attention to my teacher, a girl who sits across from me constantly plays with her toy while text messaging her friends.

It’s fine if people want to listen to their iPods in class, as long as it doesn’t disrupt those who are trying to learn. In between choosing the right ‘jam’ and texting her pal about how she’s whiling away her time, she gives out sudden bursts of laughter that are really annoying. The sad thing is that after class, she walks up to me and asks me if she can borrow my notes.

It’s like these devices form some sort of invisible force around the person that he or she is completely oblivious to anything that goes on around them.

If she doesn’t have the initiative to listen and pay attention in class, it’s not my job to keep her up to date on the lectures and class activities. It’s like an addiction that she and many like her have. They just can’t put the darn thing down.
