Homophobia in School

"They make it seem like every gay person they encounter would try turn them gay when that is FAR from the real case."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Musa Aziz

More public schools are starting to incorporate the subject of same-sex couples into their curriculum. Youth Radio’s Musa Aziz has no problem supporting same-sex marriage. He discusses how his homophobic classmates react to the subject and offers up some advise on how we can eliminate the discrimination of homosexuals. (December 24 on KCBS)

When my teacher announced that we were going to talk about same-sex couples, some of my classmates busted out with disapproving groans, especially the guys.

We started this unit in my American Government and Economics class, as part of an overall focus on civil rights.

I’m probably one of the only people in my school that supports same-sex marriage. But I didn’t really feel like I wanted to speak up much because I was still thinking about how others might judge me - and my peers tend to let their stereotyping run out of control when they’re fired-up about homosexuality.

They make it seem like every gay person they encounter would try turn them gay when that is FAR from the real case. Personally I do not see why guys are so threatened by gay guys.

Maybe if we spent less time fighting against one another, we would have better knowledge about society and ourselves, because discriminating against homosexuals is just like discriminating against people based on race.
