School The Way I Want It

"The tracking system helps me play on my strengths and weaknesses."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Lisa Aultman

For Youth Radio’s Lisa Aultman, tracked classes are something she enjoys because she's in the driver seat and moving at her own pace. Lisa discusses how the tracking system has helped her in school. “I switched from honors physics into regular last year because I couldn’t handle the workload, and I most definitely think my AP English class moves really really slowly.” (January 8 on KCBS)

I like tracked classes.

Why am I suddenly a terrible bigot and elitist just because I want to learn at my own pace? I switched from honors physics into regular last year because I couldn’t handle the workload, and I most definitely think my AP English class moves really really slowly.

I have been in untracked classes. Currently my economics class is untracked and the lessons make me want to smash my head into my desk regularly. It doesn’t have to be that way; slower paced doesn’t mean simpler concepts.

For me, I like being able to move at a fast pace in the humanities subjects where I’m comfortable, and I like being allowed to slow down with the crazy mathematic and scientific formulas that don’t make sense the fifth time, let alone the first time.

The tracking system helps me play on my strengths and weaknesses.
