An Early Start

"I‘ve practically been going through the application process since I was in diapers."

By Joshua Raifman, 15

Listen to this Commentary!

Though Youth Radio's Joshua Raifman is only a freshman in high school, he is concerned with college applications. He hopes his experience applying to several prestigious private schools will make things a bit easier. He say's, "I‘ve practically been going through the application process since I was in diapers."

Right now, many high school seniors are anxiously awaiting their college admission letters. Even though I’m only a high school freshman, I totally empathize. I‘ve practically been going through the application process since I was in diapers.

I’m lucky – I attend a prestigious private school, and there are only 86 students in my entire class. I was just five when I applied to kindergarten. And I didn’t apply to just one school. Nope, I applied to eight. And just last year, I went through the rigorous application process again when I applied to three high schools.

Of course, the applications for kindergarten were a breeze. But the high school applications were another story. I had to submit teacher recommendation letters, write two different essays, take a standardized test, and unlike a lot of college students, I had to go through an interview too. I know I sound like I’m complaining, but ultimately when I apply to college, I hope to have the peace of mind... knowing that I’ve been there, done that.
