Budget Cuts

"I don’t have time to stress about budget cuts that never seem to have any effect."

Listen to this commentary!

By Hevanya Gardeen

At the end of last school year, everyone was worried about the budget cuts.

It was constant stress – wondering what classes and activities would be cut. Besides class cuts, we were also told that most of the teachers and even the counselors would be laid off, and that’s just ridiculous! This made us think about how disorganized the next school year would be, since there would be no one to keep us on track and sort out our schedules. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I even LIKED most of my teachers. It was still sad, though, to think they’d all lose their jobs.

But here’s the twist. When school started this year, it wasn’t chaotic. I walked in, and all the classrooms had teachers in them. It turns out that although funding was dropped for the arts and theater department at my school, most of the teachers were reinstated and so were the counselors. They did just announce that some PE might get cut, including my jazz class. But my teacher promises that she will never let the program die.

So basically, this year is going fine. It doesn’t even seem as though there was a budget cut AT MY SCHOOL. All of my worrying was for nothing. With so much drama in my life, between homework, parents, and friends who can go crazy sometimes, I don’t have time to stress about budget cuts that never seem to have any effect.

I know I’m lucky, because I hear stories about kids at other schools losing their favorite teachers and classes they really really liked. But I just wish MY school administrators hadn’t been so negative about the budget cuts. They made it seem like school was going to be terrible, and it’s not any worse than usual. So next spring, if they start telling us about budget cuts again, I will be like, Yeah, sure.
