The superintendent of Dekalb county schools, Johnny
Brown has decided that students under his jurisdiction would benefit
from a uniform policy. He apparently thinks that we all must dress
alike in order to be able to concentrate on our studies.
A school brochure explaining the new uniform for the upcoming year
specifies that we must wear a blue, black, and khaki bottom with
a white, khaki, blue, or gold top-blue and gold only because they
are our school colors.
Am I truly going to succeed in life because I wore a white shirt
instead of a brown one in high school? I can still look just as
inappropriate in a sleazy blue top than a purple or orange blouse.
And who determines the color of an article of clothing, anyway?
I can just imagine a student arguing with an administrator about
how their aqua-marine shirt is totally acceptable because it is,
after all, blue.
After recent deliberation, Johnny Brown and the school board agreed
to allow students to opt out of the uniform policy if a parent writes
a note to the principal. No doubt students will be forging these.
Despite the mandate for Blue and Gold tops, I can't wait to wear
my red tank top the first day of school.
