A recent school shooting in DC has caused a lot of controversy over school safety, and now there are calls for D.C. police to take over security in all D.C. Public Schools.
Although the shooting was tragic, I find it ridiculous that this single incident is going to affect the entire D.C. Public School System.
There hasn’t been a single fight in the past four years I’ve attended my high school. We also have to put our bags though metal detectors that haven't found anything more dangerous than cell phones and compact mirrors. It’s obviously unnecessary to have a mandated police presence, X-Rays machines, and metal detectors. All these extra precautions would only take money from a D.C. budget already spread too thin.
Plus, most teens in D.C. have witnessed police harassment or brutality. Cops aren’t going to change anything in most schools and we need those officers on the streets.
Instead, why not close some entrances to schools and teach students to resolve their issues in different ways?
