Youth Radio's Elena Alvarez Huerta, DeSean Robinson-Walker and Enrique Rivera are in New York this week, covering the Republican National Convention. Read on to find out more about our talented Youth Radio reporters.
| Elena Alvarez Huerta, 18
Elena Alvarez Huerta was born in Los Angeles, California. She's a U.S. citizen and she grew up in Mexico. She just turned 18, and now she is old enough to apply for dual citizenship and well as to register to vote in the U.S. She just started university at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California in Tijuana. She plays the violin and used to practice Tae Kwon Do.

DeSean Robinson-Walker, 18
DeSean Robinson-Walker was born in Berkeley, CA. He’s an only child, raised by a single parent. While attending El Cerrito High School, DeSean was the Student Program Director of the high school radio station KECG 88.1 and 97.7 FM for two years. He also won two awards in the Radio Broadcasting class. DeSean was also the Vice President of El Cerrito High Schools Christian Student Union for two years. As El Cerrito High’s events DJ for two years, he set up the microphones, mixing boards, speakers and played music during the lunchtime events or rallies. He was a Richmond Police Explorer cadet for three years. learning the fundamentals of law enforcement, including police radio codes, handcuffing techniques, SWAT team building searches and hostage negotiation tactics. Cadets weren’t allowed to carry pepper spray, mace, batons or gun, but trained in how to use these defensive weapons. DeSean graduated from El Cerrito High School in June of 2004 and is now a student at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.

Enrique Rivera, 21
Enrique Rivera is from Youth Radio, D.C. at the Latin American Youth Center. Three years ago, he came to Youth Radio as a participant, later became a peer teacher, and was the producer of 2004 summer commentary series. Enrique has written commentaries on topics as varied as Latino civil rights to Jennifer Lopez to terrorism, for local outlets including Washington D.C.’s WTOP AM and Berkeley’s KPFA FM. Enrique was born and raised in Washington, D.C. His father is from Puerto Rico, and his mother is from El Salvador. He is attending American University, majoring in Broadcast Journalism, and will we working at National Public Radio as an intern this fall.
