Teenage Republican

"As I quietly took a seat in my AP Statistics class, my friend Albert impetuously called me the 'devil' simply for being a Republican."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Ricky Zhang

I'm Chinese American, but I don't get discriminated against at my school for my race. I do, however, face plenty of prejudice for being a teenage Republican.

One morning, as I quietly took a seat in my AP Statistics class, my friend Albert impetuously called me the "devil" simply for being a Republican. It doesn't stop there, either. When a political organization recently made a presentation supporting affirmative action in my Spanish class, the presenter wanted us to sign a petition to fire University of California Regent, Ward Connerly, an opponent of affirmative action-or as I'd like to state it, a man who believes in equal opportunity for everyone regardless of race and sex.

My teacher set her steely gaze on me as I refused to sign. But my beliefs make me who I am. Sadly, though, some people don't see that. Instead, they see me as the enemy.
