Tactical Differences

"So while some people are marching, I've chosen a different route to attempt to change the world."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Chelsea Vargas

I turn 18 just 5 days - only 5 days! - after the election, for me, voting is not an option. I've been thinking about making the best of the voice I do have.

I've decided I don't think the big rallies with all of the people and signs will really make much of a difference in terms of the election. Lately, protests seem to me more like the rebellious, political version of prom. It seems to be a rite of passage for a lot of people. And often times going to protests can make you feel like you're taking part in history. It's this big cathartic release of anger at the situation. So basically, it feels good.

But how much good does it do? I certainly don't want to tell anyone how to make their own voice heard - but I think I'll stick to the sidelines, thanks. Besides, I can't imagine how protesters dressed up in goofy hats or patriotic paint all over really changes many minds, especially those of moderate swing voters.

So while some people are marching, I've chosen a different route to attempt to change the world. I'm doing my best to help other people make a difference. I'll be registering voters in my college dorm this fall, helping people file for absentee status and making sure people get to the voting booths on time. It's a little less than thrilling to help fill out paperwork and stick things in the mailbox, sure, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Even though I think its great that people are out there, taking to the streets in protest, I'll be taking to the dining halls with voter registration forms in hand.
