J.Lo

"I think it’s time for her to step up and help her people."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Enrique Rivera

It’s time for J. Lo to step up.

I’m growing more and more disgusted with Jennifer Lopez. For starters, I’m angry because she never plays a Latina character in her movies.

But when I heard about her new movie, I got really upset. In “Maid in Manhattan” J-Lo finally plays a Hispanic woman, but her character is a young maid who gets out of poverty by hooking up with a wealthy white man who finds her beautiful. What kind of example is she setting for the millions of Hispanic girls who look up to her? That if they’re beautiful enough some man will marry them and make them rich?

I saw a preview the other day for a new Denzel Washington film. It’s his directorial debut and features an all African-American cast. I think J-Lo is at the same level of fame as Denzel and it’s time for her to step up and help her people.

There are many talented Latino artists out there who never get a shot. If she’s “Jenni from the block,” why doesn’t she try to put some of her millions back into the block?
