Hurricane Awareness

"I could not believe that a place so beautiful is now nothing but chaos and ruins."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Katie Soo

As the relief process for Hurricane Katrina continues, I notice a definite change in the people of America.

More and more of my friends have volunteered for The Red Cross in hope to help whatever survivors they can find. In Santa Barbara, a friend of mine got together with a small group and flew out to be a part of the recovery process.

Watching the disaster unfold makes me realize that tragedy can strike any of us. I could not believe that a place so beautiful is now nothing but chaos and ruins. It’s like watching the fall of ancient civilizations such as Aztecs and Mayans in real life. It’s disturbing but all at the same time, I am thankful that this has made me more alert and attentive.

I have begun to think about where to go or what to pack in case of emergencies. I remember thinking to myself, if I got a phone call notifying me to evacuate right away, what would be the necessities to take? Food, water, warm clothing and tools such as flashlights and batteries are now placed all around my house — just in case. There are some things that we can’t prepare for, but it never hurts to plan for the unexpected.
