It’s not hard for me to recollect the somewhat odd ideas
my grandparents and parents gave me of economics.
I’m Andrew Howe with a commentary from Youth Radio.
I used to find their stories foreign and strange, but now, their
tales are becoming my reality.
A lot of my friends’ parents have been losing money in the
stock market and facing other financial problems. This means they give us less
money to spend when what we make on our own isn’t enough.
Everyone I know is having a hard time getting money. A lot of
service jobs that were once held open for young people are being filled by more
experienced adults.
I used to be able to go and spend a night out getting dinner
somewhere and maybe seeing a movie two times a month. Even restaurant prices
are up, so I can barely afford to get out even once a month.
All those old-timey stories my grandparents told about how fast
prices rise really are believable now. Movies can cost up to $9.25, when just
a few years back it cost a few dollars less. I miss being able to just go out
and have a good time without worrying about how light my wallet feels.
