Working at the Polls

"There’s a good reason for people my age to go out and vote."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Nora Harrington

Let’s be honest, the reason I volunteer at the polls is not necessarily because of civic duty—it’s the excuse to skip school and earn an easy 80 bucks.

I know, it sounds kind of shameful, but it really is a learning experience.

When the polls open at seven I’m thinking about where everybody I know is: They’re not here, they’re in class. There’s a good reason for people my age to go out and vote. Let’s face it, it’s hard enough for kids to think past next semester, so you can imagine how abstract it feels to vote on something that might not really affect us until ten years from now.

Although my incentive for working at the polls is to make that 80 dollars, you can’t pay anyone to come out and vote. But I know I’ll be one of those 18 year olds lining up at the polls in the 2004 presidential election. I just hope I’m not the only one.

For Youth Radio, I’m Nora Harrington.
