Job Seeker

"It used to be common knowledge that if you wanted some cheap labor, you went and found a broke teenager."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Nyssa Daniels

Finding myself short of funds recently, I began looking for work.

Countless hours, lots of walking, and who knows how many applications later...and I still don't have a job. Despite the supposedly improving economy and better job market, it is still nearly impossible for a teenager like myself to get any kind of job- even at McDonald's!

Months and months later, I haven't even come close to landing that elusive job. At first, I was only applying to "cool" stores, like arcades, music stores- places I go anyway. When that proved useless, I lowered my standards and began looking for work at fast food restaurants and other undesirable places. Even that hasn't worked so far.

Where have all those low-paying jobs gone? It used to be common knowledge that if you wanted some cheap labor, you went and found a broke teenager. After all, who else would do an utterly unsatisfying job like flipping burgers for barely minimum wage, while being griped at by rude, unsatisfied customers? Are adults taking the jobs that teenagers used to have?

Thank goodness for my allowance!!
