Getting A Job

"As a fifteen-year-old, I find it hard to get a job."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Dereje Solomon

As a fifteen-year-old, I find it hard to get a job.

When you’re a teen, a lot of things start to happen that make money more important than it’s ever been. You need to have stylish clothes and fresh shoes, in order to compete with other kids in this image game. And believe me, if you’re broke, no girl will want to date you.

Also, if you want to think about your future, then you need to save up for college.

In order to get those things, teenagers need money, and to get money you need to work….unless you have a rich family that can pay for all of that. And sometimes even rich families can’t keep up with the financial demands on teenagers.

A lot of people would say it’s unfair to make kids work if they are younger than a certain age. But I think the rules keeping young teenagers from working exist because employers think kids my age aren’t mature enough to have a job.

I don’t think it should be about the age, it should be about who can do the job.
