It's What's on the Outside

Does it matter how someone looks? Of course it does...

By Cesar Z. When people have asked me, "Do looks matter to you in a person?" I have answered, "No, it's what's inside that counts." Well, I lied. Even though I would like to believe that looks don't matter, it is inevitable to look for physical attraction when meeting a person — whether to date, be friends with, or work with.

I was watching a documentary on the Learning Channel about research that proves that even though most people would say "it's the inside that counts," they actually mean "it's the inside that counts if you are tall and thin with an hourglass figure and have blond hair, blue eyes, good skin and teeth." I think this is very true. You don't necessarily have to have blond hair and blue eyes, but the rest you do have to have.

When I first heard about the results of this research, I tried putting it to a test. I asked my mom what she thought about the research and she said it was not true, that physical looks do not matter. So I asked her, "If you had to hire someone, who would you hire?"

"The one with more experience," she answered.

"What if there are two people, both with the same kind of education, same years of experience, very professional. Person number one has OK skin, hair, and teeth and is a little over weight. Person number two has good clean skin, white teeth, nicely brushed hair and an hourglass figure. Who would you hire?"

No comment. I understood this to mean that person number two would get the job. It has been proven that there are more beautiful white-collar people than blue-collar people.

To me it is sad to come to the realization that looks in our society are everything. If I were to go buy a pair of shoes, I would say that almost half of my decision would be made on the sales person's looks. If he looks good it would make me feel that the shoes I am about to buy will make me look good too…so I buy them. In a restaurant the food is more appetizing if the waiter is good looking. I know it sounds bad, but it's true — and most people feel that way without realizing it.

I know a lot of people who would disagree with me, but at the same time they are worried about their weight, skin, teeth, shoes, hair, clothes, cell phones… all this makes someone look better and cooler. Nobody wants to admit it, but we all try to fit in with what we as a society have made to be cool and beautiful.
