Stayin' Put in ATL

"It’s like the theme song from the old television show Cheer’s: “sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.” Well, I don’t have to go anywhere – I’m already there. "

By Givonte Latimore

Listen to this Commentary!

While some people find excitement traveling all over the world, others don't wwant to go far from the homes they know and love. Youth Radio’s Givonte Latimore tells us why he’s chosen not to leave his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. But that doesn’t mean he will stay put forever. Givonte says, “I’d like to mingle with other cultures that I don’t experience in my neighborhood. One day, I know I will pack a suitcase for some adventures.”

Don’t feel sorry for me just because I have never left the city of Atlanta. I’m not some poor, unhappy kid. Sure, I’ve had opportunities to leave the city where I was born, but I just haven’t taken any of those trips. I really find comfort in hanging around friends and familiar neighborhoods I already know.

One day, I would like to actually leave the state of Georgia. My goal is to attend the University of Southern California – quite a distance away!

People tell me I am missing out on experiences by not traveling. I realize this is probably true. There is only so much I can learn from reading books about other places. Some things can only be learned first hand – like the sights and smells of some middle-eastern market. I’d like to mingle with other cultures that I don’t experience in my neighborhood.

One day, I know I will pack a suitcase for some adventures. Until then, I’m content being that kid who has never left Atlanta.

It’s like the theme song from the old television show Cheer’s: “sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.” Well, I don’t have to go anywhere – I’m already there.
