Gangster Life

"Don't keep it gangsta, keep it real and don't get caught up in the image of rap music."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Shanta Osborne

Though I love rap music, I have noticed that it has had a negative impact on me and much of the youth in this country. The music can really trick you into believing that stripping and selling drugs is ok! When I was younger, I actually thought I wanted to be a stripper and be a drug dealer…the entertainment industry messed me up. When I saw all the nice cars, fancy clothes, expensive houses and all the money in music videos - I got brainwashed. What I didn't see were the dangers and harms in this lifestyle: drug use, prostitution, men totally degrading women. I don't think so. Not for me.

I'm no longer a teenager, but I sadly remember a friend of mine who was a good student and great ball player. But, he dropped out of the 11th grade and began living the wrong lifestyle, selling drugs and fathering three kids. Sure, he bought three houses and some nice cars, but he got killed - leaving three kids behind. So I ask you, what does a car, nice clothes and houses mean now? Don't keep it gangsta, keep it real and don't get caught up in the image of rap music.
