I’m Fine

"I answer tons of people’s inquiries about my current state of being with the word 'fine.' "

Listen to this Commentary!

By Chelsea Vargas

I’m fine. I say it more times in a day than I can count.

Each day at school I answer tons of people’s inquiries about my current state of being with the word “fine.” It’s not that all days are fine. Some days are awful and some days everything goes just right.

If I’m having one of those unbearable days, and some unsuspecting peer of mine asks me how I am, it doesn’t seem fair to dump all my complaints out and bring them down too. On the other end of the spectrum, I don’t want to gush about how fabulously fantastic my life is to someone who may not be feeling quite as good themselves. One of the things that makes it hard to truly answer the question is that I feel like “how are you” has been overused.

And I admit I’m just as guilty as everyone else of using the question too lightly. I guess what it mostly comes down to is that it’s easier to say I’m fine. I don’t have to try to gauge the other person’s mood or guess if they’re actually interested. Most people just aren’t equipped to respond to someone’s explanation of how they’re REALLY doing.
