Televised poker tournaments and events like the “World Poker Tour” are getting really popular on sports channels lately. But instead of just watching them on TV, my group of friends is hitting the tables ourselves.
We’re all 17-year-old high school seniors stuck in the suburbs, and with nothing else to do on a boring summer evening, a night of Texas Hold ‘em sounds very appealing. But unlike “Celebrity Poker Challenge,” a typical poker night for us means gathering around someone’s dinner table.
Most of the time I play poker expecting to lose money, but I play anyway just because it’s fun. Sometimes the pot can reach upwards of 75 dollars and every now and then, there are huge tournaments with hundreds of dollars at stake. Just the fact that you have chance to get your hands on all that money makes it seem worthwhile to bet that 20 dollars, even though that means no Jack in the Box for a whole week.
It’s better than what some other kids my age are doing to fight off the boredom – and who knows, maybe all this practice will get me to the World Series one day – the World Series of poker, that is.
