Coming Up Short

"No matter who you are, people will always find something wrong with you."

By Ashley Mapp

Listen to this Commentary!

Everyone gets teased at one point or another. Youth Radio's Ashley Mapp, a sixteen year old high school student, shares how her classmates make fun of her for being short...even though she's over 5 feet tall! The teasing gets to Ashley sometimes, but she tries to remember there is no such thing as the "perfect" height.

Some people get made fun of for not being able to play a sport, or not being able to play music, but I always get made fun of for being short.

Some people make fun of my height to be funny...but sometimes I think others just do it to hurt me. I’m only about five two. I know that might not sound so bad, but I’m one of the shortest people in my class.

I’m trying to come to terms with my height. I tell myself that being short isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I mean, everyone in my family is small so I know it runs in my genes and there’s nothing I can really do about it.

I recently read a about a tall girl who was made fun of for her height. Afterwards, I wondered, if people make fun of their peers for being short or tall, then what's the average height where no one has to deal with any teasing?

No matter who you are, people will always find something wrong with you.

My way of dealing with criticism is to think positive. And the next time someone teases me about my height, I’ll just think to myself, “Hey, at least I can walk under a branch without ducking!”
