Proud Gamer

"My peers obsess over things like MySpace and shoes, and they have the nerve to say that me playing video games is childish."

By Bill Lewis

Listen to this Commentary!

Youth Radio's Bill Lewis is a proud gamer: He adores video games, and plays everyday, but he also manages to maintain a productive academic and social life. Bill has encountered some teasing from his peers...and to all those who make fun of his video game habit, he says, "Get off my back...or I'll step on your Jordans."

I'm a senior in high school and I act my age, but there's this one part of me that still lingers in the past.

Whenever I talk to my friends about video games, there’s always that one voice in the crowd saying things like: “Do you have a life?” “Grow up!” or “You’re too old for games!”

My peers obsess over things like MySpace and shoes, and they have the nerve to say that me playing video games is childish.

I love my Xbox 360 and I love my fifteen games. I play nearly daily and I take my gaming online with Xbox Live. Now, I may sound overly obsessed with video games…but there's more to me too. I’m only seventeen and I’m graduating for sure.

I’m ranked two in my class and there’s no doubt in my mind that I’m going to college. I was named Junior Prom Prince and you already know I’m going for King. Bottom line…. I am a proud gamer and I have a life.

I’m not asking for anyone’s acceptance. I just wanted to let people know to get off my back about my games - or I’ll step on your Jordans.
