In resistance to animal cruelty Youth Radio's Catlin Grey became vegan. She and her mom often stressed about what was cooking in the kitchen. She says, "I though that my yearning for cheddar cheese and cookie dough ice cream would be my biggest challenge. But it turned out to be my mom."

When I became vegan a few months back, I though that my yearning for cheddar cheese and cookie dough ice cream would be my biggest challenge. But it turned out to be my mom.

I’ve been vegetarian for more than three years, so my mom is used to restrictions in her cooking. But eliminating dairy products as well proved to be too much to ask. She continued to make dishes laden with meat and dairy claiming she... "forgot." This gave way to bickering, which eventually became a family feud with my mom on one side and me and my soymilk on the other.

So I developed methods to diffuse the battle. I’d wait until the wee hours of the morning to strategically place vegan recipes around the kitchen as small reminders. And while we cruised the grocery store aisles, I’d casually drop tempeh into the shopping cart behind my mother’s back.

With all the fighting and scheming, veganism was taking over my life. So, I’m back to being a vegetarian. But that doesn’t keep my mom from rolling her eyes when the grocer rings up a gallon of milk from free-range, organically-fed cows.
