Youth Radio’s Mike Ginsburg talks about becoming an adult and his decision to move out of his parent’s house. “Convincing the woman that brought you into this world and nurtured you when you couldn’t feed yourself that you would be better off on your own takes more than some wet eyes and whining. Believe me, it got ugly in my momma’s kitchen.”
When I moved out, it was a huge reality check.
I was being set up for a typical suburban tale of universities and success. But during my adolescence, my usually harmless rebellious side waged a successful revolution on my brain. I had an image in my head of the adult I needed to be, but knew nothing of what it meant to become that.
Convincing the woman that brought you into this world and nurtured you when you couldn’t feed yourself that you would be better off on your own takes more than some wet eyes and whining. Believe me, it got ugly in my momma’s kitchen.
There was funk between myself and my makers, but I was the only one burning bridges. I threatened my parents and myself with the idea for months, but I had irrationally placed all funds into four wheels, thus making the idea financially impossible.
So I took a fat gulp of pride, and got the blessing, backing, and banking I needed with a simple, mature conversation. Don’t get it twisted though, support is different from a 24-hour ATM.
