Dora the Explorer, a cartoon series featuring an adventerous young female character, has become so popular that since 2000, the show's products have generated over $3 billion in retail sales. Even though producers created the series for pre-school aged children, from Atlanta to Oakland, Dora's become trendy in teenage groups. Youth Radio's Shauncee Lewis reflects on being one of these older fans, and explains her obsession with the TV show. (October 28 on WABE)
My favorite phrase is “Swiper no swiping.” It’s not some new teen slang. It’s from Dora the Explorer – a popular cartoon...for kids much younger than I am. But I love Dora! Maybe you’ve seen her: She’s a dark Mexican girl who wears a pink shirt, orange shorts and yellow socks. She has a purple backpack – just like I do!
Her sidekick is Boots – a fun loving talking monkey. I am obsessed with both of them. My bedroom looks like a scene from the show: I have the yellow and purple theme colors all over my room and I have tons of items from the cartoon: coloring books, stuffed animals. Even my hamper has Dora’s face on it. And my bed sheets are of course Dora the Explorer.
I know some people think I am a little nutty for watching a kiddy show and collecting all her stuff. I think I’m just honest about how cool Dora is. She lives an action-packed day, sings catchy tunes and actually teaches me some Spanish.
Even if you don’t have kids around watching Dora’s show, I think you’ll be singing her praises and her tunes if you watch it: “Come on vamanos, everybody let’s go. Come on let's get to it, I know that we can do it!”
