Does digital photography and the ability to share pictures quickly bring more harm than help? Youth Radio's Grant Coyle examines the pros and cons of posting pictures to websites like facebook, myspace, and photobucket.
Remember when you actually had a big 3-ring binder photo album that you had to flip through to show people your pictures? Maybe some old people still like to do that - but with today’s technology, teenagers share their memories through websites like facebook, myspace, and photobucket.
You can easily take hundreds of your pictures and put them on the internet for anyone to see. Sounds great… that is until the wrong people see those photos. At every party, someone is there with a camera or a cell phone taking pictures. The next day, I can always go online and see what everyone did the night before. You know, some people may be holding a beer, maybe kissing a girl, or maybe sitting somewhere, doing something stupid… which is why I like to run… away from the cameras.
When I see a camera out at a party, I immediately head for the other room. It really doesn’t matter what I’m doing. I don’t want to be on the internet. There are tons of stories in the news about kids getting in trouble because of some inappropriate photos of them online. I hear all the time about the kids who don’t get into college because there are pictures of them drinking online. And I don’t want to be one of them.
When someone takes another person’s photograph and puts it on the internet – it may seem funny at the time. But I think it’s wrong and often gets people into more trouble than its worth.
