"I should be able to go to the radio and hear something that I can relate and relax to."

Listen to this Commentary!

By Lauren Blassingame

It bothers me how some urban hip-hop stations only take one approach to the music they play.

No matter how much work I have to do, I find a way to fit hip-hop music into my life. That symphonic beat massages all my daily stresses away. But it’s not only the rhythm of this urban music I want to hear; I want the rhyme of the rapper to speak to me as well. As an urban female, when I come home and kick off my shoes from a long and restless day, I should be able to go to the radio and hear something that I can relate and relax to.

I believe that urban hip-hop radio stations should cater to those interested in both the fun and games of life, and the trials and tribulations. I enjoy things like laughing and rapping along to club anthems just as much as the next person, but when it is time for me to relax and take an introspective look at life, there’s no music on the radio that allows me to do that.
