Cinco de Mayo’s not feeling so well this year.
In Mexico City, celebrations were called off, with officials saying they need to concentrate on preventing swine flu’s spread.
In Oakland, California, the Fruitvale District’s annual Cinco de Mayo festival was cancelled in April due to lack of security funding. Organizers insist the decision was made before swine flu was even in the news.
"This is a non-alcohol, family event, and we want to provide the proper amount of security. But financially we couldn't do that right now," event coordinator Claudia Briones told the Contra Costa Times. "Also, we wanted to move it to September to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. That's the bigger holiday in Mexico and Latin America anyway. There, Cinco de Mayo is not a major holiday."
Even the Obamas seem a little underwhelmed by the holiday this year. The President and First Lady celebrated the holiday on the 4th, with Obama joking to the crowd, “Happy Cinco de Cuatro.”
Still, there’s something to celebrate on this typically booze-filled holiday. Schools in Mexico will be reopening within the next week, and many scientists are saying the virus seems less dangerous than previously thought. In Mexico, only 38 % of suspected cases have turned out to actually be swine flu, and there have been no new reported deaths since April 29th.
In the United States, federal health officials are considering removing the recommendation to close schools with confirmed cases of swine flu. As of today, 11 San Francisco Bay Area schools remain closed.
Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce CEO Felix Galaviz is also concerned how swine flu could affect Latino businesses in the Bay Area.
“Mexico is responding intelligently to the swine flu epidemic, but mostly we hear about countries isolating people of Mexican descent”, Galaviz says. “This also discourages people from travelling to Mexico and could impact trade with the country.”
As for now, it looks like the party will have to wait, at least until the Bay Area’s rain and fears clear up.
