The Insomnia Draft returns as Andrew Meyer wraps up his look at the college point guards with the most buzz:
Armon Johnson (Junior, University of Nevada): For one reason or another everyone's going crazy over a guy who is a score first, turnover prone PG who has a Jarred Jeffries like range and a reckless style that doesn’t lead itself to the team game.
The Good: Dude is very good on the defensive end and can often cause teams to rule out pick and rolls and isolating players on the perimeter from their game plan. He also is a great finisher and has potential to be a good rebounder.
The Bad: Besides the aforementioned suck, he is a bad passer who relies on a horribly awkward lefty jumper and has a Baron Davis like shot selection. He also lacks leadership, and it is apparent on the court where he often fails to facilitate teammates which leads to other teams being able to single in on him. He also has below NBA court vision and can’t seem to see halves of the court for minutes at a time
Verdict: Johnson will get lots of looks based on his athleticism, but if he is unable to fix the non-physical aspect of his game and looks to have quick and painful career.
Sherron Collins (Senior, University of Kansas) : As the ringleader of a perennial power you’re going to get looked at. My opinion on him varies day to day, so this one is hard for me because I could easily see him as a similar to Kyle Lowry on some days and Acie Law on others.
The Good: Has had lots of experience in stress situations and is cool in all of them now. He is a freight train when he goes in the lane and bulldozes his way around. He is a natural alpha dog and gets respect organically. He has a 2.1 A/TO ratio and rarely makes a bad decision. He also knows his limitations and tries to mask them by rarely showcasing them.
The Bad: Just too limited athletically. He just doesn’t have the lateral movements to be effective guarding most guards. His size nullifies his body type on defense. He also has a hard time finding a man on drives, which is a must for NBA PG's these days. Overall he just takes away several things needed for a starter
Verdict: Dude has one of the most uphill climbs out of any prospect, but who knows, he could carve out his niche as a role player for an already good team.
