Since 1972 balloonists from around the world participate in an annual event that attracts over 750 balloonists. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta occurs early October in the beautiful state of New Mexico. The event lasts nine days and is known as the largest hot air balloon festival in the world.
Every year the International Balloon Fiesta presents friendly competitions such as the Fiesta Challenge, a game where balloonists attempt to drop a marker closest to a target, America's Challenge Gas Balloon Race, a competition to see who can travel the furthest (some have reached Canada!) and a Special Shapes Rodeo (such as the Purple People Eater or the Wells-Fargo Bank Pigs). Ballon Glows, my personal favorite, are night time events in which the hot air balloons stay grounded but are illuminated by their propane burners. This year is no exception.
Albuquerque is looking forward to blue skies, gorgeous views of the Sandia Mountains and a lively atmosphere provided by over 100,000 spectators. Albuquerque’s 2009 International Balloon Fiesta begins October 3rd and runs through October 11th.
